European Research Training Course

Research is a challenging and crucial undertaking to progress the prevention and treatment of diseases. Research is even harder in complex multifactorial diseases, such as diabetes-related foot disease. In this field, research continues to be hampered by low quality, as outlined regularly in systematic reviews, guidelines and future research agendas. To improve the quality of future research and the knowledge and skills-set of researchers in this field, we will organize the first-ever training course in this field, for the special introduction price of 250 euro! The first-ever European Research Training Course in diabetes-related foot disease

  • Improve the quality and relevance of your research
  • Learn about challenges and pitfalls in diabetic foot research
  • Advance your understanding of checklists and tools
  • Increase your knowledge of FAIR data management
  • Practice scientific writing, presenting and publishing

Background behind this course

The European Research Training Course is the culmination of the EU-funded DIALECT-project. Within this project, a large consortium of European universities, hospitals, companies and other organisations have worked for years to train and nurture the next generation of researchers in this field. The combined experience of all that training, and all those members within this consortium, is now amalgamated in this research course – to also train talented next-generation researchers outside the consortium.

Content of the course

In this course, we will focus on key and core aspects of research, both in general and in diabetes-related foot disease specifically. This includes pitfalls specifically for research in this population, the use of global standards and checklists, FAIR data management, and the primary modes of communicating research findings: presenting, writing, and publishing. The course will be interactive, with dedicated teachers and a maximum of 20 participants, allowing for meaningful discussions and peer-to-peer and teacher feedback.

When will this happen?

The European Research Training course is scheduled on the 1.5 day preceding Europe’s primary scientific meeting on this topic, the Diabetic Foot Study Group (DFSG) meeting. In 2026, DFSG will take place in Florence. The research course will also be held in this beautiful city, on Wednesday September 23 (from 11.00 until 20.00) and on the morning of Thursday September 24 (we will – of course – finish on time for the start of DFSG).

Who will be your teachers?

The course is delivered by three experienced researchers and teachers, who have been responsible for all training within the DIALECT consortium, and who collectively have over 50 years of experience in research in this field. Professor Sicco Bus (Amsterdam UMC), professor Hans Savelberg (Maastricht University) and doctor Jaap van Netten (Amsterdam UMC) bring their scientific and teaching skills to Florence, and hope to see you there.
