A new study led by Victoria Milbourn (Amsterdam UMC) has been published in Diabetes Care, examining outcomes following a diagnosis of Charcot neuro-osteoarthropathy (CNO) using linked regional healthcare data from Scotland.
The study found that emergency hospitalization, lower-extremity amputation and mortality were common after a diagnosis of CNO, with many adverse outcomes occurring early. Advanced chronic kidney disease was associated with poorer outcomes, while high or active foot-risk status was associated with amputation and shorter amputation-free survival. The findings reinforce that CNO should be recognized as more than a foot complication and may reflect broader systemic vulnerability.
The work was developed during a DIALECT research secondment at Glasgow Caledonian University. The collaboration brought together researchers from Amsterdam UMC, Glasgow Caledonian University and other DIALECT partner institutions.
