Abhilasha Akerkar

My name is Abhilasha Akerkar and I am a healthcare professional from Mumbai, India.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Dental Surgery from the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, India and a Master’s degree in Public Health Science from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Over the course of my career, my professional choices have always reflected my decision to work within interdisciplinary research areas.

As a clinical practitioner in India, I gained valuable insight into the role of diabetes as a risk factor for oral health conditions. Working in an EU intervention study helped me acquire an understanding of the interaction between clinical and biomolecular factors with respect to adverse gestational outcomes such as gestational diabetes. These experiences helped me delve deeper into the clinical implications of diabetes research and made me realize the importance of practising evidence-based medicine.

Now as DC-1 at Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen, I am most interested at the prospect of analysing a combination of modifiable biomechanical, biomolecular and behavioural risk factors, so that impactful results might be obtained for the personalised treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

In this project, we aim to carry out research which would aid in the clinical decision- making process with respect to diabetic foot ulcer development, recurrence and amputation.
