Long Bio_Isabella
My name is Isabella Gigante, and I am a Ph.D. student in a project called “ Data-driven optimisation of custom-made footwear for the high-risk person with diabetes”. I am passionated about improving human health, specifically to decrease the global issue of diabetic foot. I was born in Italy, but I was raised in Sweden.
I embarked on my academic journey by pursuing an international bachelor’s degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics at Jönköping University, where I gained a solid foundation in human biomechanics. This educational background fueled my understanding of the crucial role played by footwear and orthotic treatments in preventing, treating, and promoting human health and diabetic foot.
Driven by my desire to contribute to scientific knowledge, I pursued an International Master’s in Health Science at Linnaeus University, Sweden. During my bachelor’s degree, my fascination with diabetic foot disease blossomed. Recognizing this condition’s immense impact on individuals’ lives, I focused my efforts on conducting research in this field. This has led to that I have had my first published peer-reviewed article on offloading interventions provided to patients with diabetes-related plantar forefoot ulcers in Sweden.
Over the past four and a half years, I have sought research experiences to further my expertise. I am currently collaborating with Plymouth University and Sahlgrenska Academy in an international research initiative. Additionally, I am in the Chair at ISPO-Sweden (International Society of Prosthetics and Orthotics), where I am actively contributing to advancing the field. Notably, I have also been part of a start-up company, VistaFeet, that developed a medical device capable of warning patients at risk of developing diabetes-related foot ulcers by measuring temperature differences on the plantar surface of the feet.
Beyond my academic and professional achievements, I firmly believe that addressing foot ulcers and their related issues requires a comprehensive approach. I recognize the significance of integrating not only biomechanical aspects but also psychological, social, environmental, and economic factors. I want to drive positive change in tackling this global health challenge by advocating for a transdisciplinary approach where the patient’s wishes and needs are the focus.
